5th EAI International Conference on Wireless Mobile Communication and Healthcare - "Transforming healthcare through innovations in mobile and wireless technologies"

October 14–16, 2015 | London, Great Britain

Title of special session:

Smart Phone based Health Diagnostics and Monitoring (SP-Health)

Aim and objectives: There is an unmet need to develop inexpensive, disposable and easy-to-use diagnostic devices that can be used at the point-of-care. This is particularly important for resource-limited regions of the world which has limited access to expensive lab equipment and infrastructure. Smart phone based disease detection and monitoring platforms are appealing in both resource-limited and resource-rich settings. This special session will bring together multidisciplinary contributors from academic and industrial researchers in the field of bio sensing, mobile communication and medical measurements to identify and present technical challenges and recent results related to the integration of smart phone based healthcare diagnosis. The research and interest areas to be covered by the special session include, but are not limited to:

  • Point-of-Care (POC) diagnostics
  • Minimally invasive disease detection platforms
  • Mobile technologies for Ambient assisted living
  • Healthcare telemetry & telemedicine
  • Bio sensing
  • Chemical analysis of breath and sweat for remote diagnostic
  • Internet-of-things (IoT) advances home healthcare
  • Mobile computing for health status monitoring and remote diagnosis
  • M-Health applications for remote healthcare
  • Mobile Robotic Tele-surgery (or Robotic assisted surgery over wired or wireless)
  • Lensless Imaging for Rapid Cell Counting

Waseem Asghar (MIEEE, MIEEE EMBS) is an Assistant Professor at Computer Engineering & Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department, and Department of Biological Sciences (Joint Appointment), Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, Florida. He received his Ph.D. in Spring 2012 from UT Arington, with a research focus on development of micro and nanoscale devices for cancer diagostics and treatment. Dr. Asghar held a postdoctoral appointment at Harvard Medical School and Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology (July 2012-April 2014). Later he joined Stanford School of Medicine as Research Fellow before coming to FAU. He has solid background in nano-biosensors, BioMEMS, point-of-care devices, reproductive technologies, and tissue culture. His research focuses on a broad area of biotechnology including development of flexible microfluidic platforms for HIV patients, smart phone based sensing platforms, early detection of cancer at molecular and cellular scale, microfluidic devices for sperm sorting, cryobiology, and drug delivery. He has published his work at many prestigious peer-reviewed journals including NanoToday, Materials Today, Advanced Healthcare Materials, and Lab on a Chip. His research has been featured on journal covers of Lab-Chip (twice), IEEE Nanotechnology (twice), and Analytical Methods. He has published 23+ peer reviewed journal papers, 5 full length conference papers, over 15 conference abstracts, 2 book chapters, 3 patent disclosures. He is awarded couple of prestigious fellowships including “IEngage Mentoring Fellowship” and “STEM Fellowship”. He is recipient of various prestigious award including “Faculty Mentoring Award”, and “Nanofab Best Graduate Student Award”. His research work has received excellent media attention and was recognized by many premier magazines including Newsweek, Wired UK, Popular Science, Sciencedaily, and Engadget alongwith many others. His research work been covered by several television channels including WPTV and WPLG TV Miami.
