WELCOME TO MOBIHEALTH 2012: Chair's Message

On behalf of the organising committee, it is my honour and joy to welcome you to Paris, the City of Light, for this third edition of MobiHealth.
Technically co-sponsored like its predecessors by the IEEE EMBS Society, MobiHealth 2012 assembles an ensemble cast of technical presentations selected after a rigorous and fair review of submitted contributions. This process demanded more effort than I could have imagined and I hope that the quality and relevance of the end result are good reflections of the time and energy put in by the reviewers (to whom I express my enormous gratitude).
The programme has been enriched by three keynotes covering the entire scope of the conference: Public e-Health programmes; Implantable electronics devices; and Standardisation issues. Each day of the conference will be opened by one keynote, which will set the tone for the technical contents of the day. We have also invited three researchers to present their work in a special session on Implantable systems. The special scope of this edition, "ICT for Healthcare in developing countries", is integrated through a tutorial and an invited talk. The panel discussion on the industry-led "Concerto" project will present a cross-disciplinary and multi-team approach to delivering healthcare using mobile technologies. Two workshops, APHS and IWAWPLC, are being organised concurrently with the main conference.
All of this leads to 90 participants hailing from 28 countries. We have reason indeed to be proud of this technical and cultural variety, and to hope for enriching interactions.
I am also hopeful that you will also take this opportunity to relax, meet old friends and make new ones. For this, the opening wine-and-cheese cocktail and the conference dinner are excellent opportunities.
Since all work deserves its fair share of play, I exhort you to get lost in this city and to find something for and by yourself. As Bogart said in 'Casablanca': “We’ll always have Paris”. I pray that upon your departure from Paris, you will have left a part of yourself in this conference and in this city, and that you will take and always carry a part of the conference and city in yourselves.
To conclude, I would stress that without the support of my efficient and close-knit team, and my school, the Institut Supérieur d’Electronique de Paris, the organisation of MobiHealth would have been a much more daunting task.

Scope
The third edition of MobiHealth proposes to continue and extend the focus areas of the first two editions. The essence of the conference lies in its interdisciplinary nature, with original contributions cutting across boundaries but all within the ambit of the application of mobile communications (technologies, standards, solutions, methodologies, …) to the improvement of human health. As such, the conference will have a multi-tier approach: going from in-body sensor devices to ubiquitous patient monitoring environments.
The main themes will include (but are not limited to):
- Advances in sensor devices for biomedical monitoring
- Intra-body communication issues (propagation & transmission)
- Body Area networks (architectures, protocols, scheduling, …);
- Heterogenous and in-/on-/out- networks;
- Wearable, outdoor and home-based applications;
- Data collection and management at hubs, mobile devices and gateways;
- Energy management and optimisation issues in biomedical devices and networks;
- Decision support algorithms for data analysis;
- Healthcare telemetry and telemedicine;
- Remote diagnosis and patient management;
- Accuracy, reliability, security, protection, identity, privacy, of diagnoses and data;
- All-pervasive wireless systems for health applications;
- Factoring in the environment (hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living,…).
