High mortality rates in developing countries can be attributed partly to a lack of access to affordable healthcare to a majority of people living in rural areas of these countries. Other factors include, non-availability of qualified medical doctors, unsafe operation of medical equipment, supply and consumption of medicines beyond the expiry date and ignorance of people. Thus, any effort to provide healthcare to poor should try to address all these factors.

In this tutorial, the speakers share their experience in running rural health centers in India and Bangladesh to provide affordable healthcare. This includes development of low-cost portable diagnostic technologies, deployment of Smart Phone/Tablet based telemedicine solutions, evolving guidelines for safe operation of medical equipment, formation of village-level health clubs to educate people, etc.

The tutorial will start with issues and challenges involved in providing healthcare to rural communities in developing countries followed by a detailed presentation of mobile diagnostic technologies developed and deployed to provide affordable care. Safety and reliability of the medical equipment will be emphasized in the third part of the tutorial with a few case studies of the on-going efforts in India and Bangladesh presented in the fourth and final part.
